After five long years, 31-year old shot stopper Joe McDonnell is back among the Wombles
McDonnell had already spent time with the Dons from 2014 to 2020, making 34 appearances under coach Ashley ‘Bayzo’ Bayes while playing for both League 1 and League 2 in a total of six seasons. It’s coach Bayzo who Joe credits with influencing him to become a goalkeeper from their time in Basingstoke Town.
Since his time with the Wombles, Joe has gone on loan multiple times and donned the jerseys of four other clubs: Harrow Borough, Notts County, Eastleigh, and Boreham Wood. It was with Eastleigh that he covered a whopping 230 National League games, earning him a Player of the Year award.
Craig Cope (Director of Football) said: “We’re delighted to bring Joe back to the Club, he returns with over 200 appearances under his belt. Joe is a top professional, a good goalkeeper and a good character.”
“As soon as this option came up I jumped at the chance. To be part of Wimbledon again is a great opportunity,” says the 31-year old shot-stopper now that he’s back in yellow and blue at the Cherry Red Records Stadium for a two-year contract.
"This is a club like no other because of the fans we have, I can't wait to see some familiar faces again," McDonnell says as he looks forward to reintroducing himself to the club that created so many great memories for him.
The Wombles open League One playing Luton Town at Kenilworth Road on August 1st.
