Palace start, and start on the bench, Joe Whitworth and Owen Goodman (both 19) away at Brighton.

The Athletic are reporting that a late hamstring injury to first choice Crystal Palace goalkeeper Vincente Guaita means that the Eagles are without a senior first team goalkeeper for their rival tie against Brighton.

Guaita, 36, has started all 26 of Palace's matches so far this season, and kept Sam Johnstone out of the side before the latter was ruled out with a calf injury in February.

Jack Butland joined Manchester United on loan in January, whilst fourth choice Remi Matthews is spending the season on loan at St Johnstone.

England youth international Whitworth has been at Crystal Palace since the age of 13, having previously played for AFC Wimbledon at youth level. Having made 23 appearances for Crystal Palace U23s in the 2021/22 Premier League 2 season, he signed a contract extension with the Eagles in January 2023.

A childhood Palace fan, Whitworth has been on the bench on several occasions for the Eagles so far this season.

Speaking after Whitworth signed his new contract, manager Patrick Viera said: "He is used to being around the first team. He’s somebody that we believe has a really strong potential.

"For him to be on the bench, it’s important to see how Vicente prepares himself during games. Also, to see and learn about the atmosphere during games and in the dressing room".

Undoubtedly, Whitworth's ‘really strong character’, per Viera, will be an asset for the Eagles should he start tonight against Brighton.

"He knows himself really well – he knows his strength and weaknesses. He’s really mature for an 18-year-old boy", continued Viera.

Owen Goodman, Palace's second option to start against Crystal Palace, has also featured at youth level for England. He earnt a place on the Eagles' bench against Wolves in October, signing a contract extension the following month.

Palace academy director described Goodman as “one of the most exciting young goalkeepers we’ve had here in my time at the football club”. Like Whitworth, Goodman has also been at Palace since he was 13.

He was reportedly due to join up with the Nigeria U20s for 2023's U20 AFCON, but did not in the end.

Palace go into tonight's match having not yet won in 2023. They sit 12th in the Premier League.
