A technicality in the rules means Jonas Urbig could win two leagues this season.
After winning the Bundesliga title with Vincent Kompany’s team, Bayern Munich goalkeeper Jonas Urbig has his eyes on a rare double prize: a two-title win this season.
Sunday’s match yielded a draw for Bayer Leverkusen with Freiburg, confirming the Bundesliga victory for Bayern. A day before, on Saturday, Bayern drew 3-3 with RB Leipzig. This means that with only two games remaining, their eight-point lead is now immune to any strikes against it.
Urbig has been playing for Bayern in the place of injured veteran Manuel Neuer, giving the young shot stopper an opportunity to win a league winners' medal.
In January Urbig was signed to Bayern at 21 years old. Within this season though, he had already made 10 appearances for his old team at FC Köln. This means that if his former club goes on to win the 2. Bundesliga title, he would be a recipient of that award as well.
Urbig says, “I am in very good contact with the lads and I would be extremely happy if Köln win the second division title.”
One for Köln and two for Urbig!
This double top win feat in Germany has only been done twice before – in the 1980-81 season with Pasi Rautiainen playing for Bayern and Werder Bremen and in 1986-87 Frank Hartmann with Bayern and Hannover.
