A roundup of the goalkeeper news headlines between the 7th and 14th of April.

Onana embroiled in controversy as mistakes costs Manchester United

On Thursday, Manchester United travelled to France to play Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter final. The game started and very little chances were being created. However, before the half-hour mark, Lyon were awarded a free-kick from crossing range. The ball was played in by Almada, sailing through the sea of players towards Andre Onana, looking like an relatively straightforward catch, but the Cameroon international had other ideas. The ball bounced over him and into the back of the net.

Luckily for the United goalkeeper, his actions were overshadowed by a Yoro equaliser and Zirkzee goal which looked like a late winner. Seconds remained and the Red Devils looked like they would take a one goal advantage to Old Trafford, but, once again, Onana came to the French side's rescue.

He spilled a tame shot into the path of wonderkid, Rayan Cherki, who calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. It was another poor showing from Onana, raising more eyebrows as to whether United need a new goalkeeper.

On Sunday 13th April, manager Ruben Amorim opted for Altay Bayandir to start in United's 4-1 defeat against Newcastle, explaining that 'Of course, you have to see the context.'

'It is a normal thing. Sometimes, you have to push the player to play again, sometimes you have to let him disconnect a little bit.

'Tomorrow, he will be in training to prepare for the next one [Lyon] so I felt that it was a good time for Andre to disconnect.

'I think he was okay [about it] because I explained and then, you don't need to like [it], but you understand because I explain every situation.'

Ederson comes off injured after another Premier League assist

In Manchester City’s game against Crystal Palace this weekend, Ederson added another assist to his tally for the season. The Brazilian now has four assists this season, which is a record for a goalkeeper in one top flight campaign. However, not long after getting his assist, he unfortunately was taken off the pitch due to injury in the 71st minute. The severity of the injury is uncertain, but City fans will be praying that he’s available to play as they push for Champions League qualification.

Dean Henderson buy-back clause for Manchester United?

After Onana’s mistakes midweek, attention at United has reportedly been on the goalkeeping department. The Red Devils have been linked to the likes of Diogo Costa and James Trafford, but some have been focusing on Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Dean Henderson. Henderson played 14 games for United, and it has been rumoured that the Englishman has a supposed buy-back clause in his Palace contract.

PSG fans seen booing Emiliano Martinez in Champions League clash

In midweek, Aston Villa travelled to the capital of France for their Champions League quarter-final. Argentine Emi Martinez was already not a popular figure in France after his World Cup final performance and antics during their winners’ bus parade in 2022, but he really rubbed salt in the wounds before kick-off. The Yashin award winner was spotted wearing a cap with all his international awards with Argentina sewn onto it, with the World Cup front and centre. Luckily for PSG fans, justice was somewhat served as Martinez received an unpleasant reception before kick-off and the Parisians won the game 3-1.

Peterborough goalkeeper brings home third Wembley trophy

On Saturday evening, EFL veteran Jed Steer played a big hand in keeping a clean sheet and helping Darren Ferguson's Peterborough United to their second consecutive EFL Trophy win.

Peterborough beat a promoted Birmingham City side who were coming into the fixture looking to add a second trophy this year following their capture of the League One title earlier this month.

The 32 year old held the back line for the Posh, making a superb save to deny Lukas Jutkiewicz in stoppage time, securing a 2-0 victory. He was also key when they defeated Wycombe Wanderers in the 2024 edition of the tournament, making this his third victory at the national stadium having won the play-offs there with Aston Villa six years ago.
