There is reported uncertainty about Nick Pope’s future at Newcastle, and while the Tyneside club have one eye on keeping the English shot-stopper, they have another eye open to new opportunities as well. Because the 33-year-old Pope has been said to be unwilling to play a mere supporting role at St James’ Park, other rival Premier League clubs’ radars are reportedly now on high alert for him as well.
On the Newcastle side, one goalkeeper on their radar is Joan Garcia. The Spanish international has had a good season with Espanyol and is reportedly a target for Real Madrid, Aston Villa, Manchester United, and Newcastle. The standout La Liga goalkeeper who made a name for himself with his lightning-fast reflexes and dominance in the air, and is understood to be open to a switchover to the Premier League. Newcastle reportedly have a finger on the £21 million transfer trigger.
James Trafford of Burnley has also attracted a Newcastle eye and fits the Newcastle vision, having been linked with the club for some time. Manager Eddie Howe has reportedly had an eye on the 22-year old since his youth days at Manchester City, and although no deal was signed despite interest being shown since June last year, Newcastle are still interested in Trafford after a stellar season - and bonus, valuable Premier League experience.
The door to St James’ Park’s goalposts remains wide open. Even with Nick Pope’s question-mark status, he still remains a dependable Premier League shot stopper, with 27 appearances in this season and eight clean sheets as part of the Newcastle defensive unit. But the bench is not his plan.
Let’s keep our eyes peeled this summer.
