Donnarumma's omission from PSG's Super Cup squad has brought a shock end to his career in the French capital.
Last week, it was reported that with less than 12 months left on his contract at the Parc des Princes, the 26-year old Gianluigi Donnarumma was open to exploring a move away from PSG. The news came amid PSG's signing of highly-rated Lucas Chevalier from Lille, who is expected to be the club's new number one.
The French giants were keen on tying down Donnarumma after a monumental few years with the club. And PSG did offer a contract extension for him (though in doing so, hoping to lower his wages), but the offer reportedly fell short of the Italian goalkeeper’s standards. Moving back to Italy to join Inter Milan at the end of next season was one option floated, but a Premier League move may now be on the cards.
Manager Luis Enrique opened the door to a move for Donnarumma after dropping him from PSG's squad for the Super Cup, saying he requires a goalkeeper with different qualities and leaving the Italy captain 'disappointed and disheartened'.
'These are always difficult decisions to make,' said Enrique. ‘I can definitely talk about Gigi, because he’s one of the best players in his position, without a doubt. He’s even better as a person. We’re looking for a goalkeeping profile that is different to Donnarumma. It’s always difficult to make the decision in these kinds of situations. My decision is a decision that’s been taken, it’s been supported by my club.’
Donnarumma then published a message on Instagram which explained that ‘Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team’s success…I hope I have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done. If that doesn’t happen, I want you to know that your support and affection mean the world to me, and I will never forget it.'
Whilst Inter Milan are thought to be an interested part, the race for Donnarumma is far from over as Manchester United and Manchester City are also been reportedly gunning for the Italian. A move to City would be odd, given the club's signing of James Trafford and the (relative) confirmation that Ederson will stay in Manchester next season. However, with Ruben Amorim in the market for a new shot-stopper and Donnarumma having just what it takes to succeed in the red half of the city, we just have to wait and see where the Italian goalkeeper will make his next save.
